Case Study:
Automating Debris-Flow Risk Assessment

A Python and ArcGIS Pro workflow for translating modeled debris-flow hazards into infrastructure risk tables and maps.

The challenge
Assessing risk across transportation corridors and buildings required combining hazard and flow-depth rasters with infrastructure, traffic, occupancy, and structural information. Repeating those calculations across scenarios created substantial processing and review work.

My contribution
As part of my professional work, I developed an ArcGIS Pro Python toolbox to automate spatial processing, risk calculations, and classification. The workflow produced modeled fatality-risk estimates and economic-risk classifications, with supporting estimates of cleanup costs, disruption, and structural consequences.

The deliverables
Results included numerical values and descriptive risk classes in attribute tables, alongside mapped classifications communicated through color and symbol shape. These complementary formats allowed project teams to examine individual assets and understand broader spatial patterns.

Traceable results
The workflow retained intermediate datasets and recorded the hazard and depth values used in calculations, supporting quality checks and investigation of individual results. Outputs reflected the supplied hazard models, infrastructure data, and assessment assumptions.

The outcome
Automation reduced repetitive processing that previously took days or weeks to minutes, making scenario comparisons and revisions more practical while preserving outputs for review.
